Type 2 Diabetes — A Case of The Immune System Gone Bad, Too?

We know Type 1 diabetes is related to an immune system gone bad. But Type 2? Really?


We know of Type 1 diabetes as an autoimmune disorder. In Type 1 diabetes, the immune system mistakenly diagnoses the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas as mean, evil invaders, and proceeds to terminate them with extreme prejudice.

As a result, people who suffer from Type 1 diabetes are unable to produce enough insulin to signal the rest of the cells to take in glucose from the blood after a meal, resulting in a spike in their blood sugar levels.

Type 1 diabetes is rooted in an immune system disorder, and if one is born with it… there ain’t no cure for it at the moment, unfortunately.

But what about Type 2 diabetes? How does Type 2 diabetes affect the immune system?
